I've also put together a new SUPER Jumpstart Package that I know many of you will be interested in. HEALTH ALERT - Potential dangers of Crestor
Some doctors are advocating that adults and even children begin taking Crestor to prevent heart disease, no matter what their cholesterol levels are. I believe this idea will lead to the next “Vioxx Scandal.”
A recent study reports that the statin drug known as Crestor may help reverse arteriosclerosis. In a small study funded by the drug’s manufacturer, AstraZeneca, arterial plaque was reduced by 7% over a two-year period.
Dr. Steve Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic, who announced the finding that the top dose of Crestor could reverse the build-up of plaque in coronary arteries late on Monday, said the data were "shockingly positive." But he added that the trial did not answer the question of whether less plaque meant fewer heart attacks and strokes. Further tests will be needed to prove that.
Industry analysts also cautioned that the Crestor study, involving just over 500 patients, did not have a control group, making the findings potentially of less significance.
Not waiting for the dust to settle, AstraZeneca has initiated an aggressive marketing campaign to help build demand for its once troubled drug. Make no mistake, statin drugs are big business. Statin sales in the US alone account for more than $12.5 billion a year!
Before you get caught up in the hype generated by AstraZeneca’s new multimillion dollar ad campaign, please take a moment to read about the potential dangers of Crestor in particular and statins as whole.
Crestor dangers were discovered even before this drug was approved, as FDA findings indicated that Crestor dangers posed a significant threat to patients who took higher doses of this medication. Because of these Crestor dangers, the FDA did not approve higher dosage of this medication. The most significant reports regarding Crestor dangers are the risks associated with developing serious and life threatening muscle and kidney problems. Since this drug was approved, Crestor dangers have caused almost thirty patients to develop Rhabdomyolosis, a serious and potentially fatal degenerative muscle condition.
Rhabdomyolosis is a condition that causes the atrophy, or breakdown of muscle cells throughout the body. These muscle cells release harmful chemicals into the blood stream causing disruptions in the amount of blood that circulates in the body. Crestor dangers are further compounded by the fact that these chemicals are highly toxic to the kidneys. Crestor dangers associated with Rhabdomyolosis can cause acute renal failure and extensive damage to other internal organs. If not treated, these Crestor dangers can prove fatal.
A recent report in Circulation, the official journal of the American Heart Association, highlights the dangers of Crestor, stating that this drug is more likely than similar drugs in the group to increase the risk of muscle deterioration, kidney failure, and kidney disease.
This most recent study indicates that Crestor could be up to six times more likely to cause adverse health effects over a twelve-month period than other drugs within the class. The report suggests that Crestor only be used as a last resort measure for patients due to its potential dangers.
Bayer, the maker of Baycol, also known as cerivastatin, a popular cholesterol-lowering statin drug, similar to Crestor, voluntarily pulled it off the market after 31 people died from complications from the medicine.
Worst Pills, Best Pills, an independent source for prescription drug information, has this to say about Crestor: "Do Not Use! Rosuvastatin (Crestor) - A New But More Dangerous Cholesterol Lowering Statin Drug." They have a very detailed website with many reasons listed - check it out for yourself at worstpills.org. Citizen.org, another public interest organization, says on their website, "FDA Knew of Crestor Dangers but Approved Drug Anyway, Public Citizen Writes this in Lancet Medical Journal...
More Cases of Muscle Deterioration, Kidney Failure Reported
WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had evidence before approving the cholesterol drug Crestor that it caused an increased incidence of rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle deterioration), yet the agency approved it anyway, erroneously believing that this toxicity was limited to an 80 milligram dose that was not ultimately approved, Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, writes in this week’s issue of The Lancet (June 26)."
Despite reports of serious Crestor dangers, Crestor's makers claim that Crestor poses no more of a threat to patients than other statin drugs. This should be no conciliation since many experts feel that all statin drugs pose serious health risks including increased risk of stroke, heart attack, death, suicide, depression, congestive heart failure, muscle pain, and kidney failure.
